Dave's Market Update - 5 July 2023
In Veg
Still, plenty of all tomatoes are available and this week that has even extended to our delicious Heirloom variety. If you haven’t tasted these you really should. To me, they are far and away the best-eating tomato we sell. Not far behind are the sweet delights which will also be on special this weekend. We have a very unseasonal flush of snow peas in our stores this week at prices we associate with spring, not mid-winter. The beautiful weather in north Qld that has brought on the tomato crops is also causing massive numbers of red caps to flood the markets as well.
We have a red hot special on imperfect kumera in our NSW stores and washed potatoes are great quality and cheap as well. It's so good to have all these great vegetable specials to offer to our customers after a couple of years when things were really tough. We exist in a very cyclical, weather-determined industry and we are at the consumer end of the cycle now.

In Fruit
Fairly uneventful week for fruit. There are a few more berries around and there has been a little rain in the growing areas, I am not hearing enough to cause trouble. As with last week, the Washington state cherries are again fantastic. They will be with us in quantity for another couple of weeks. As always there is very low demand this fortnight as many of our customers are travelling with their school-age kids and most prices are flat as a result. Net oranges are very good value and now starting to eat very well. For something a bit different this week, we have those little Rockit apples a bit cheaper than they usually are. Our Imperial mandarins are now coming from down south, not as sweet as the Qld fruit however far more solid and will keep better.
